Sharia arrives at your friendly Community House

If you happen to live in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda East, you’re in for a surprise. Sharia is steadily infiltrating the area, as Alma Road Community House is now a venue for Friday Islamic prayers.

Victoria is famous for its Neighbourhood (Community) Houses and Learning Centres, which are ‘local organisations that provide social, educational and recreational activities for their communities in a welcoming supportive environment’, allowing ‘opportunities for people’s participation and learning’ (reference)

It is difficult to know where an Islamic prayer group which endorses Sharia law fits into this, especially as the prayer group takes up the whole space, thereby preluding its use by others during this time. The group is described as “an Islamic Centre” on the website.

Strangely, there is also an Islamic Society run from the unit next door, occupied by one Qaiser Mohammed. Even more curious, the website seems to be run by Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah, whose leader is Mufti Afzal Hoosen Elias.

In “Thieves, give Muhammad a hand! The tragic sound of one hand clapping in Islam’, Mufti Afzal gets a mention:

Sad to report, the policy of chopping off the hands of thieves comes directly from the Quran itself, in Sura or Chapter 5:38…Some Muslim apologists, especially on the worldwide web, seek to squirm out of the plain and harsh meaning of Sura 5:38 with dubious translations. To counter this confusion and subterfuge, the following long list of Muslim translations anchor the key words and prevent endless disputes.
"And as for the male and female thief, cut off their hands" (Mufti Afzal Hoosen Elias, translator of Mufti Muhammad Aashiq’s commentary);

Another famous son is Ibrahim Siddiq-Conlon , who proclaimed:

"One day Australia will be ruled by sharia, no doubt. That is why non-Muslims are worried, because they know one day they won't be able to drink their beer, they won't be able to eat their pork and they won't be able to do their homosexual acts, because one day they know they will be controlled."
Siddiq-Conlon formed Sharia4Australia last year, styling himself as the new champion for Islamic law in Australia… He formerly studied under the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah Association…

Despite all this, Exective Officer, Sandy Joffe has no problem with Islamic prayers being held:

This is a fantastic facility, enjoyed by many people who live, work, play – and pray – in the area. It is used for rummy tiles and children’s parties, play groups and prayer groups, secular and religious celebrations. It represents the diversity of our community.

But then, Sandy Joffe is active in the Australian Jewish Democratic Society (AJDS), a fringe Jewish group which often espouses the Islamist cause, such as giving a platform to pro-Palestinian activist Samah Sabawi, who ludicrously defined Israel as an apartheid State. (reference)

I bet you want to know where they wash before prayers. No problem, ritual washing is being performed in the washroom which houses a disabled and a child’s toilet.

Until relatively recently, there has been minimal Muslim presence in this area. Wikipedia reports:

St Kilda East is one of the more diverse and densely populated suburbs of Melbourne. It has a prominent Jewish community descended from Polish and Russian immigrants. Quiet and residential, it is quite different from the adjacent suburb of St Kilda…There are many churches in St Kilda East…Many of the church buildings are historic and heritage registered and form various religious precincts. Surely the Islamists haven’t targeted East St Kilda to infiltrate, as it is a bastion of Judeo/Christianity?

Far from providing social, educational and recreational activities for their communities in a welcoming supportive environment,’ allowing the House to be used as a prayer house will prevent others from feeling welcome there. Local people will be too intimidated to use this wonderful facility, which should be open to all. Many people, especially the aged, disabled and very young, depend on the House for a social outlet. Let us not deny those most in need just to satisfy the demands of a group who would deny freedom and opportunity to others.
