Halal or haram, is make-up a sin? Part 1

On making up a list of the personal restrictions of Islam, I have come to the conclusion that Islam dictates virtually everything and that a major consideration for Muslims is, ‘is it halal or haram?’  Muslims have an ‘external locus of control’ as their every act or choice is regulated by the example of Mohammad and sharia which determine what is halal and haram –allowed or forbidden.

This is Islam’s morality and has nothing to do with what we would call morality as many things which are halal we find repulsive eg sex with children, beating females, slavery and rape etc while things which are haram, like wearing a hair piece, seem ridiculous.  The absurdity continues in the creation of  ‘halal’ makeup --- because, horror of horrors, some makeup contains a tiny bit of pig fat --- OH, NO not ‘THE PIG.’  So of course Muslims must have their own special ‘halal’ makeup –though I thought makeup itself was banned (Haram) or at best, worn only in the home to attract hubby –it’s tough competing with those really young wives and concubines and one can be dumped with just a few words from hubby.

Of course Muslims are told that a ‘ledger’ of every activity is kept by allah and get too many ‘harams’ and it’s hell but the joke is that it’s completely irrelevant as text clearly tells Muslims that pre-birth, as allah fashions them from a 40 day old bloodclot, he decides their entire life including whether they go to hell or that brothel paradise!  Why bother about halal/haram?

Everything is labelled allowed/forbidden but at times this must cause great distress because not all schools of law have exactly the same list of halal and haram  and conflicts arise between text and laws.   Oh the confusion and the fear of punishment!   ‘Reason or rationality’ doesn’t come into it.

Makeup:

Let’s start with that new marketing strategy, halal makeup –sold as  ‘pure and natural.’  Of course fat isn’t ‘natural’  or ‘organic’ (that other catch word), nor is alcohol,  yet both are carbon based (organic) products of a biochemical process?  And a container of pure ethanol isn’t pure?  Pure what?   We think of ‘pure’ as uncontaminated by something else but  Mohammad said  re ‘pure water’....

***Abu Dawud Book 1, Number 67:    Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri:   I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah (peace_be_upon_him): Water is brought for you from the well of Buda'ah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything  (also repeated in Book 1 Number 66)

***Abu Dawud Book 1, Number 63:   Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him), was asked about water (in desert country) and what is frequented by animals and wild beasts. He replied: When there is enough water to fill two pitchers, it bears no impurity.

Clearly Islamic ‘pure’ is something very different and NOT something I’d want to risk!!

And further advertising for halal makeup states -

‘A certified Halal product means that the product is produced using no haram products or alcohol (including fluids used to clean equipment) in the manufacturing process. Testing is done to ensure that there are no pork or animal bi products used in the process. OnePure is dedicated to developing products that only use the finest purest Halal certified ingredients.’....
“We do not simply claim to be Halal, we are certified Halal by a 3rd party certification body that confirms our products are suitable for Muslims to use”, claims Layla.....
In Islam, as she says, it is forbidden to use beauty products that contain questionable ingredients, since a Muslim must be clean and pure before he or she prays. Haram ingredients, she says, if [they] are on your body, your prayers will not be accepted......
‘Ms. Mandi, proud for setting a new standard in Halal certified beauty, hopes to educate people on (the) grounds of using Halal products so the consumer now has a choice whether or not they want to RISK using Haram ingredients on their bodies.’   (Muhammad 2010)

Muslims are paralysed to act until they get a ruling on what is halal and haram and note how this add plays on this paralysis and the FEAR of using something ‘haram.’   Your prayers will NOT be accepted...do you want to RISK having haram products on your body?

This sounds just like the VEIL threat -

***Abu-Dawud Book 2, Number 641:     Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:  The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman who has reached puberty unless she wears a veil.

Note also that the product is ‘triple tested’ so lots of opportunist Muslim money makers can get their cut and the silly women that go for this will be paying.  Note the ‘halal certified ingredients’ and yes, you the consumer will pay for the ‘halal certification.’

As for the ‘no alcohol even in fluids used to clean the equipment,’ this is cause for concern as alcohol is a great sterilization agent that evaporates to leave equipment dry.   Are we to risk products prepared on possibly dirty equipment?   Where will it end?  Will we have ‘halal undies’ made with ‘halal cotton or polyester’ on equipment not cleaned with fluids containing alcohol?  Already in hospitals we have Muslims refusing to use the alcohol scrubs (the most effective cleaners) and wearing dirty hijabs and long sleeves -all vehicles for infection.

I bet some Muslims thought alcohol was only ‘haram’ for drinking ––well, WRONG it seems!

And how many other ‘haram’ ingredients/products do you use/wear on your body –OH NO!!   Better check the soap, shampoos, conditioners, handcream, body lotion, bath gel, bubble bath, washing powder, talc, tampons, pads, clothing, ........well everything to make sure it’s ‘Islamically Pure and Clean’ lest you have a HARAM speck on you when you go to pray!!  Is that hijab made of Islamically pure material on Islamically pure/clean machinery and washed in an Islamically pure and clean way and dried in Islamically pure air?

Back to the makeup-
Why do Muslim women need makeup anyway as they must veil and they are NOT to go out in dazzling display or draw attention to themselves in anyway –particularly NOT the attention of males?  They can’t even click their heels!

***Koran  24.31.   And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms (or Juyubihinna –body, face, neck and bosom) and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, ……….., or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. .....

And an associated hadith states –

***Bukhari Volume 6, Book 60, No. 282:   Narrated Safiya bint Shaiba: 'Aisha used to say: "When (the Verse 24.31): "They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms," was revealed, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their faces with the cut pieces."

(similar text is reported in *Abu-Dawud Book 32, Number 4089, 4090, 4091 and in *Abu-Dawud Book 32, Number 410 Mohammad told a man to veil his wife)

***Koran 33.33 (referring to Mohammad’s wives, examples for all)
And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former times of ignorance; ........And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.

What is the good Muslim woman to do?

Women are told not to do things to change their appearance such as filing their teeth, plucking facial hair, wearing make-up or hair pieces or dying their hair or getting a tattoo etc to beautify themselves and thus change what God had created. (see part 2)

Is makeup halal at ALL even if it doesn’t contain the dreaded bit of pork fat or alcohol? Are these halal makeup manufacturers trying to make money by pretending something is HALAL when in reality it is HARAM?

And the anguish,  as on one Muslim site a Muslim female asked if she had prayed in makeup that was NOT halal was her prayer disallowed ?

One response on the site stated “All I know about the whole makeup issue is that you are only allowed to use it in order to beautify yourself for your husband, not for other unrelated men.”

The evil of makeup –

***Muslim Book 24, No. 5309:   Sa, id b. Musayyib reported that Mu'awiya said one day: Should I narrate to you the evil of make-up. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) forbade cheating. ........

**Reliance of the Traveller, Shafi'i law e4.1 (4) p 58 allows the eyes to be lined with kohl-‘each eye an odd number of times, preferably three.’

What a quandary!!

Some missing information in the decision making: A RORT, a CON and pre-destiny:

The whole thing is a rort and a con.   A rort because it is a money making exercise based on ignorance and fear and a con because whether you choose halal or haram, your life and afterlife have already been determined.

Muslims are in a sweat over halal and haram because many koranic verses tell Muslims that everything they do is recorded (a ledger of acts) and their soul is pledged or ‘mortgaged’ for those deeds with their deeds weighed at  judgement day.  But this is irrelevant in fact, for whether they make hell or paradise is determined by allah pre-birth as allah fashions the Muslim and writes their fate which cannot be altered.  Allah breathes your sin into you!

***Koran 17.13, 14  Every man's fate We have fastened on his own neck: On the Day of Judgment We shall bring out for him a scroll, which he will see spread open.   Read your book; your own self is sufficient as a reckoner against you this day.

***Muslim book33, Number 6393: (tells a doubter) --: How can a person be an evil one without (committing an evil) deed?......   the Lord decides as He likes and the angel writes it down, and then the angel gets out with his scroll of destiny in his hand and nothing is added to it and nothing is subtracted from it.

To CON Muslims into doing the ‘halal’ and not the ‘haram,’ they are told that those going to paradise (predetermined) will find doing the ‘halal’ easy eg

***Bukhari Volume 8, Book 77, Number 602:     Narrated 'Ali: While we were sitting with the Prophet who had a stick with which he was scraping the earth, he lowered his head and said, "There is none of you but has his place assigned either in the Fire or in Paradise." Thereupon a man from the people said, "Shall we not depend upon this, O Allah's Apostle?" The Prophet said, "No, but carry on and do your deeds, for everybody finds it easy to do such deeds (as will lead him to his place)." The Prophet then recited the Verse: 'As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah..' (92.5)
(see also Number 595)

Many Muslim hadith also record people asking whether they should depend on their pre-determined destiny rather than worry about their deeds and the same reply is given ( *Muslim Book33, Numbers 6398,  6399, 6400, 6401, 6402, 6403, 6404, 6405)

This however is a real CON as many hadith reveal that even if you do deeds characteristic of the people of paradise, just before you enter paradise, what has been dictated by allah and written down by the angel, overtakes the person and they enter hell if allah decreed it pre-birth!

***Bukhari Volume 4, Book 55, Number 549:   Narrated Abdullah:    Allah's Apostle, the true and truly inspired said, "(as regards your creation), every one of you is collected in the womb of his mother for the first forty days, and then he becomes a clot for another forty days, and then a piece of flesh for another forty days. Then Allah sends an angel to write four words: He writes his deeds, time of his death, means of his livelihood, and whether he will be wretched or blessed (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into his body. So a man may do deeds characteristic of the people of the (Hell) Fire, so much so that there is only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses, and so he starts doing deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise and enters Paradise. Similarly, a person may do deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise, so much so that there is only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses, and he starts doing deeds of the people of the (Hell) Fire and enters the (Hell) Fire."

 (also *Bukhari V4, Book 54, No. 430; * V8, Book 77, Nos. 593 and 594; *V 9, Book 93, No 546: and  Muslim book 33, Nos. 6390, 6391, 6392: 6393, 6394,   6395—this adds that allah makes the limbs perfect or NOT as he desires---ie allah causes deformities.. also No’s  6396: 6397, 6407, 6406).

A life doing the deeds of the people of paradise, including fighting for allah is meaningless if your fate says otherwise eg a man who was the bravest fighter for Mohammad was seriously injured and Mohammad said he would go to hell and when the man killed himself because of his pain (the punishment for suicide is hell) Mohammad was praised for seeing the man’s fate even though he was a brave fighter –and Mohammad said –

***Bukhari Volume 8, Book 77, No. 604........There-upon the Prophet said, "A man may do the deeds of the people of the Fire while in fact he is one of the people of Paradise, and he may do the deeds of the people of Paradise while in fact he belongs to the people of Fire, and verily, (the rewards of) the deeds are decided by the last actions (deeds)".

Also repeated in ***Bukhari Volume 8, Book 77, No. 603 with the added text –“ None will enter Paradise but a believer, and Allah may support this religion (Islam) with a wicked man."   (Are some Muslims including jihardis wicked??)

Text in Muslim also says you can do the deeds of hell and go to paradise ...and vice versa (*Muslim Book 33 Numbers 6406, 6407, 6408).  Allah breathes your sin and piety into you and your destiny is set.

***Muslim book33, Number 6406:   .................Two men of the tribe of Muzaina came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion that the people do in the world and strive for, is something decreed for them; something preordained for them and will their fate in the Hereafter be determined by the fact that their Prophets brought them teachings which they did not act upon and thus they became deserving of punishment? Thereupon, he said: Of course, it happens as it is decreed by Destiny and preordained for them, and this view is confirmed by this verse of the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious:" Consider the soul and Him Who made it perfect, then breathed into it its SIN and its piety" .

And this evil pre-destiny is applied to children ‘even when they were still in their fathers loins.’

***Muslim Book 33, No. 6436:   'A'isha, the mother of the believers, said that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was called to lead the funeral prayer of a child of the Ansar. I said: Allah's Messenger, there is happiness for this child who is a bird from the birds of Paradise for it committed no sin nor has he reached the age when one can commit sin. He said: 'A'isha, per adventure, it may be otherwise, because God created for Paradise those who are fit for it while they were yet in their father's loins and created for Hell those who are to go to Hell. He created them for Hell while they were yet in their father's loins.

Isn’t it heart-warming to read that allah DELIBERATELY creates people for hell!   (for some text see Evil allah leads people astray –circe 13/5/08.  Allah promises to fill hell with people and jinn –particularly women and black people)

Even Mohammad, allah’s prophet did NOT know what would become of himself –Would he be ‘saved? (Koran 46.9).  Belief in the hereafter and performing ‘halal’ acts does NOT mean you’re going to paradise.  Surely this is terrifying for Muslims who regardless of their actions etc have no guarantee of being 'saved.'  How dumb do you need to be to fall for the halal/haram scam?  And that includes westerners who are sucked into this Islamic insanity!

And remember Mohammad said on many occasions that hell is populated by women –devil-like creatures inferior in their intelligence and religion (From the most revered * Bukhari hadiths –vol. 1 book 2 No. 28; Vol 1 Book 6 No. 301; Vol 2 book 18 No. 161;  Vol 2 Book 24 No. 541; Vol 3 Book 31 No. 172; Vol 7 Book 62 No. 124).  Koran 4.124 may say the true believer, male or female will get to paradise but the reality according to other koranic text and many hadiths is that females very, very rarely make the grade!

What is a female to do?

Well, looking at the ‘dazzling’ Muslim females with their obvious make-up, silk, showy hijabs or none at all, mixing with unrelated men etc indicates that some are prepared to RISK the ‘haram.’   Perhaps they already know that it’s all been predetermined so who cares!  Perhaps they know the whole thing is a big CON but are too scared to leave Islam as apostates face death.   Perhaps they’re hypocrites already marked for hell.  Perhaps they’re trying to fool us.

Halal or Haram,
It’s such a scre-am,
Oh what can I do,
I cannot choose like you..

Well, better email ‘ask the imam,’ honey, we wouldn’t want you to actually think and decide for yourself or in any way be responsible for yourself and your actions.    (a few more halal/haram problems are noted in part 2)
