Boycotting Democracy

(with thanks to Shirl in Oz for the links)

Back in my student days, we protested AGAINST apartheid. Today’s students support apartheid movements like Australians for Palestine, who call for a boycott of Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East.

How has this moral inversion come about?

Are our students – despite almost limitless access to information at their fingertips - so brainwashed that researching the facts is beyond them?

The unions’ support of the BDS defies reason, as Israeli Arabs have more rights and a better standard of living than in any Arab country. Strange also how, with all the brutal totalitarian regimes worldwide, the unions focus solely on Israel.

The media are, with a few honourable exceptions, eager to run with any false claim made against Israel, whether it’s the blood libels percolating throughout the Arab world, the al Dura fraud, the Jenin massacre hoax and recently, the flotilla con.

The BDS campaign is yet another fraud perpetrated by well-funded Islamists - aided by their useful idiot acolytes.

Israel is a thriving multiethnic country where the 20% Muslim population enjoy equal rights, go to the same universities, visit the same hospitals and where Arabic is an official language. Bet you can’t name an Arab country where Hebrew is an official language!

For a real apartheid country, look at any Arab or Islamic country. Fancy a trip to Mecca? If you’re not a Muslim, forget it! Want to build a church in Saudi Arabia? I wouldn’t bet on it, given that even bringing a bible into this country can land you in jail. And what about this much touted new Palestinian State, where all will live in harmony –

Shamefully, the Maritime Union of Australia recently hosted a racist Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Conference in Melbourne. One speaker was union leader Kevin Bracken, famous for saying the September 11 attacks were a conspiracy.

For an insight into the evil and often unlawful activities of Justice for Palestine, Brisbane, see  THIS FLIER

In England this racist rabble is a regular feature on the streets. Richard Millett writes:

The Palestine Campaign sponsors the fortnightly anti-Israel demonstrations outside Ahava paying for the thousands of leaflets that are distributed to passers-by. There are obviously times when the planet need not be spared.

…a few pro-Israel counter-demonstrators asked Director of the Palestine Campaign, Sarah Colborne whether she denounced Hamas for their call to kill Jews in their Charter (Article 7). She replied: “I will not engage with you.”
Now, I have no major problem with someone being anti-Israel, if that is their wish, but surely it isn’t too difficult to denounce an organisation that expressly wishes to kill Jews. (source)

Luckily, not all union leaders are loons: Paul Howes, Vice-President of the Australian Council of Trades Unions (ACTU), and National Secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, declared:

‘… despite the headlines, most of the trade union movement in Australia has not backed BDS. The bulk of the international trade union movement… are rock-solid in their support for Israel…and delivered a stinging rebuff to advocates of the campaign to boycott Israel.

Most importantly – in a stunning blow to BDS activists in some unions – the Israeli national trade union centre, the Histadrut, was honoured by the global trade union movement...
…There is not one person of significance in the Australian union movement… not one person from the 50-plus ACTU Executive… speaking at this BDS conference

The person credited for founding this international BDS Movement, Omar Barghouti, was born in Qatar, grew up in Egypt and moved only recently to Ramallah. Barghouti is a post-graduate student in Israel at Tel Aviv University, due to complete his PhD this year. When Israeli students at the university raised a petition to demand he be expelled, the university authorities rejected the petition…They were not going to boycott Barghouti because of his ideas – even though Barghouti himself promotes and supports an academic boycott of Israeli universities. When asked about this irony he told the media “my studies at Tel Aviv University are a personal matter and I have no interest in commenting.”

… The international BDS solidarity groups may mouth words about their support for a two-state solution. But they are in reality one-staters. Defacto they support Hamas. They do not back President Abbas and his Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
… this for them is just a useful first step to attack the legitimacy of the State of Israel. It doesn’t take much to find out what the international BDSers actually back: a campaign which wants to see Israel disappears.

Barghouti has been quite explicit in stating that his real aim is not a two State solution but the end of Israel itself. In Barghouti’s own words he supports: “ a Palestine next to a Palestine, rather than a Palestine next to an Israel.”  (source)

The promotion for the conference stated:

…we have come together to initiate a call for a national Australian BDS conference for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and justice.

Plenaries will address the history of civil resistance and boycotts, including an analysis of apartheid in South Africa and Palestine; colonialism in Australia and Palestine; and lessons from Palestine solidarity work internationally…

In 2009, millions of ordinary people in Australia, and around the world, protested in condemnation of Israel’s brutal all-out bombing of 1.5 million Palestinian civilians residing in the open-air prison know as the Gaza Strip…we have again seen hundreds of thousands of people around the world take to the streets to protest Israel’s murderous attacks on the international humanitarian flotilla, which was carrying 700 human rights activists who were attempting to break Israel’s illegal siege of Gaza, and deliver more than 10,000 tonnes of much needed humanitarian aid. Israel’s pre-mediated violent attack on the flotilla left 9 international human rights activists dead and dozens more wounded. (source)

This rhetoric of hate could not contrast more starkly with Israel’s civilizing message:

We offer peace and amity to all the neighbouring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all. The State of Israel is ready to contribute its full share to the peaceful progress and development of the Middle East. (From Proclamation of the State of Israel, 14 May 1948)

Green Left provided one of the few reports on the Conference:

More than 100 Palestine solidarity activists gathered in Melbourne for Australia's first national BDS conference…launched with a public meeting at the Victorian State Library, chaired by ABC satirist Bryan Dawe and addressed by Palestinian artist and activist Rafeef Ziadah, the Australian Society for Palestinian Iraqi Refugees Emergency’s Yousef Alreemawi, Israeli editor Ofer Neiman and Unions ACT's Kim Sattler.

The conference adopted a four-stage calendar of actions for the BDS campaign, including a Christmas consumer boycott campaign, campus actions for the international Israeli Apartheid Week coinciding with Palestinian Land Day on March 30, and other actions coinciding with al-Nakba (the anniversary of the Palestinian expulsion from Israel in 1948) on May 15 and another in late September.

Ziadah said: "Getting activists in Australian cities talking about Israel as an apartheid state is a great achievement..This conference was the first step to creating many hubs of Israeli delegitimisation in Australia." (source)

How can getting people to believe LIES be a great achievement? People of moral clarity ridicule the claim that Israel is an apartheid state. But Saudi money has enabled Islamic propaganda to infiltrate our schools, universities and churches. Lies repeated become truth to the ignorant.

But a few brave souls are standing up amidst this sewer of vitriol:

Italian journalist and parliamentarian Fiamma Nirenstein joined former Spanish PM Jose Maria Aznar in launching the admirable and long overdue Friends of Israel Initiative..she organised a mass rally in Rome on the theme “For the truth, for Israel”... This great and noble rally, which attracted some 3000 people, was billed as "the first European, bipartisan event aimed at restoring the truth regarding Israel, putting an end to the barrage of lies that are hurled at Israel every day and to the double standard used by the media and international organizations."

Nirenstein has also spoken up on a topic which, shamefully, is regarded as taboo in left-liberal Western circles – the appalling treatment of Christians by some Islamic regimes. “Islam does not like Eastern Christians: it has forced them to flee and now they account for only 6 percent of the population in the Mideast”. In contrast, the Christian population of Israel has increased. “In Muslim countries, on the other hand, Christians are on the wane, but the 50 churches present in the Holy Land seem not to notice. They prefer to dump on Israel, where they enjoy full freedom of worship and expression”.

Nirenstein also turned her attention to the Vatican Synod on the Middle East. She characterised a document – which speaks in the name of "us Christian Palestinians" and avers that “the military occupation is a sin against God and against man” - as “written in a tone of theological excommunication towards the State of Israel”. The document excommunicates Christians who support Israel, compares to South African apartheid the defensive barrier that has virtually halted terrorist attacks on Israel, appears to justify terrorism in speaking of the “thousands of prisoners who languish in Israeli jails”, describes “resistance to the evil of occupation as a Christian’s right and duty”, and in essence repudiates Israel’s right to exist.

Referring to Merkel’s observation that Germany's “multikulti” approach to immigration “has failed, utterly failed,” Nirenstein said: “certain cultures very often have no intention of mixing in with ours, despite our best intentions. Paris has become a city in which more than 200,000 people live in families where polygamy is common practice. In Italy 30,000 women have been subjected to genital mutilation and Islamic courts – ninety-odd in London alone – inflict sentences that are inconceivable.”

“For us, ‘immigration’ is a sacred term, filled of a sense of guilt, of generosity, of religion and liberal or left-wing overtones. But democracy is also a sacred term: the masses of immigrants that do not share our democratic values put it in danger.” (source)

Of course, the claim of Palestinian peoplehood is a giant hoax, endorsed by much of the world, either through ignorance or out of desire to cloak anti-Semitism in a more palatable anti-Israel form. (See AIM article: Poor Palestinians 15 March 2009.)

Read also Barry Brumfield:

There has never been a civilization or a nation referred to as "Palestine" and the very notion of a "Palestinian Arab nation" having ancient attachments to the Holy Land going back to time immemorial is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated upon the world. There is not, nor has there ever been, a distinct "Palestinian" culture or language, has never been a Palestinian state governed by Arab Palestinians in history, nor was there ever a serious Arab-Palestinian national movement until 1964... three years BEFORE the Arabs of "Palestine" lost the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] and Gaza as a result of the 1967 Six-Day War (which the Arabs started). Even the so-called leader of the "Palestinian" people, Yasser Arafat, was EGYPTIAN. The so-called Arab "Palestinians" are a manufactured people... with no history and no authenticity... whose sole purpose for existence is to destroy the Jewish State.

Israel first became a nation in 1312 B.C., two thousand years before the rise of Islam. In 586 B.C. these first ancient Jews in the Land of Israel [Judea] were overrun and Israel's First Jewish Temple (on Jerusalem's Old City Temple Mount) was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, king of ancient Babylon. Many of the Jews were killed or expelled; however many were allowed to remain. These Jews along with their progeny and other Jews who would resettle over the next 500 years, rebuilt the Nation of Israel and also a Second Temple in Jerusalem upon the Temple Mount. Thus the claim that Jews suddenly appeared fifty years ago right after the Holocaust and drove out the Arabs is preposterous. (source)

And let’s not forget the irrepressible Dennis Miller, who coined the more accurate term, “adjacent Jew-haters”, instead of “Palestinians”:

The Palestinians want their own country.
There's just one thing about that: There are no Palestinians.
It's a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years.

Like "Wiccan," "Palestinian" sounds ancient but is really a modern Invention. Before the Israelis won the land in war, Gaza was owned by Egypt, and there were no "Palestinians" then, and the West Bank was owned by Jordan, and there were no "Palestinians" then. As soon as the Jews took over and started growing oranges as big as basketballs, what do you know, say hello to the Palestinians," weeping for their deep bond with their lost "land" and "nation."

So for the sake of honesty, let's not use the word "Palestinian" to describe these delightful folks, who dance for joy at our Deaths until someone points out they're being taped. Instead, let's call them what they are: "Other Arabs Who Can't Accomplish Anything In Life And Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death."

I know that's a bit unwieldy. .. How about this, then: "Adjacent Jew-Haters." Okay, so the Adjacent Jew-Haters want their own country. Oops, just one more thing. No, they don't.

They could 've had their own country any time in the last thirty years…But if you have your own country, you have to have traffic lights and garbage trucks and Chambers of Commerce, and you actually have to Figure out some way to make a living. That's no fun. No, they want what all the other Jew-Haters in the region want: Israel.

They also want a big pile of dead Jews, of course -- that's where the real fun is -- but mostly they want Israel.

Why? For one thing, trying to destroy Israel - or "The Zionist Entity" as their textbooks call it -- has allowed the rulers of Arab countries to divert the attention of their own people away from the fact that they're the blue-ribbon most illiterate, poorest, and tribally backward on G-d's Earth, and if you've ever been around
G-d's Earth, you know that's really saying something
. (source)

Miller rightly ridicules the whole Palestinian roadshow.

If those in power in the free world would follow his lead, maybe we could get somewhere: dialogue certainly isn’t achieving anything - except more sharia!

Palestian martyrdom farce also known as Paliwood

But hatred for Israel has permeated all our institutions, as Howard Jacobson laments:

I was once in Melbourne when bush fires were raging... you could smell the burning… It has been the same here…with the fighting in Gaza. Only the air has been charred not with devastation but with the hatred of Israel expressed in our streets, on our campuses, in our newspapers, on our radios and televisions, and now in our theatres.
…an unreasoning, deranged and as far as I can see irreversible revulsion that is poisoning everything we are supposed to believe in here – the free exchange of opinions, the clear-headedness of thinkers and teachers, the fine tracery of social interdependence we call community relations, modernity of outlook, tolerance, truth.
But I am not allowed to ascribe any of this to anti-Semitism. It is, I am assured, “criticism” of Israel, pure and simple. In the matter of Israel and the Palestinians this country has been heading towards a dictatorship of the one-minded for a long time; we seem now to have attained it. Deviate a fraction of a moral millimetre from the prevailing othodoxy and you are either not listened to or you are jeered at and abused, your reading of history trashed, your humanity itself called into question.

…So leave them to it, has essentially been my philosophy. A life spent singing anti-Zionist carols in the company of Ken Livingstone and George Galloway is its own punishment.” (source)

Jacobson recently won the Booker Prize for his book, The Finkler Question, partly inspired by the BDS movement and Jewish self-hate. Nick Cohen reviews the book:

The butt of Jacobson’s humour is a group so ostentatiously righteous that few commentating on the Booker mentioned his attack. I don't know if literary journalists were baffled or unable to handle a delicate subject…Finkler announces on Desert Island Discs…that although he is Jewish, "on the matter of Palestine I am profoundly ashamed". His shame makes him a star… Comedians, actors, directors and professors hail his "bravery" and join his group, ASHamed Jews, as it meets in a room at the Groucho to discuss how to boycott Israel and explain away Islamist violence.
I assume that any relationship between ASHamed Jews and Jonathan Miller, Alexei Sayle, Stephen Fry and the others who joined Jews for Justice for Palestinians is just one of those weird coincidences.
The Booker prize jury's decision to honour him will be an optimistic moment if it signals an end to the stultifying consensus which smothered British culture in the 2000s. …when you could guess what the message of a political play would be before the curtain went up…. When, if an author showed a war veteran from Iraq or Afghanistan in a play or television drama, he was always a psychopath and never a man who had fought psychopaths. When apparently serious people thought that Michael Moore was an honest thinker.
As Finkler's wife says after asking why he had denounced Israel on Desert Island Discs: "I know – your conscience made you. A convenient entity your conscience. There when you need it, not when you don't. Well, I'm ashamed of your public display of shame and I'm not even Jewish."

Speaking of ASHamed Jews, the BDS conference found 2 perfect examples as speakers:

Anna Baltzer
“a Jewish-American Columbia graduate and Fulbright, who has worked as a volunteer with the International Women’s Peace Service in the Occupied West Bank, documenting human rights abuses and supporting Palestinian-led nonviolent resistance to the Occupation. Anna is the author of the book Witness in Palestine and speaks widely in the USA and internationally on the Palestinian struggle for human rights and self-determination.”

Ofer Neiman
“co-editor of the Occupation Magazine, and one of the activists in the Israeli support group for the BDS campaign, “BOYCOTT! Supporting the Palestinian BDS call from within”.

More ASHamed Jews are to be found in Jews Against the Occupation (Sydney). (source)

But not all Jews are ASHamed: some are finally starting to fight back:

The Jewish Federations of North America and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs… are launching a joint initiative to combat anti-Israel campaigns…The BDS movement is a sinister campaign designed to erode the very basis of Israel's legitimacy. Israel's supporters must quickly do what they can to stem the damage.
…by confronting boycotters head on… as did the JCRC when a boycott was planned outside the Ulta store in Silver Spring, urging customers not to buy Ahava products, charging they "were illegally produced by settlers ...on stolen land."
The JCRC sent out an e-mail alert, notifying those on its mailing list of the boycott and urging them to buy Ahava. By Monday morning, Ulta's Ahava shelves were bare.
Fighting BDS must be part of a continuing effort to educate the public about Israel's legitimacy and proper  place in the world. The message should be clear: we all stand with our brothers and sisters in Israel in defense of the Jewish homeland and its right to exist.

Another group working to dispel the lies is Stand With Us:

Today, the war against Israel has mutated into a global campaign to poison hearts and minds against the Jewish state. Israel is being demonized and isolated by organized movements like BDS… the newest weapon in the ongoing effort to destroy Israel. Using words, images, and actions to spread misinformation and lies, boycott activists try to delegitimize and demonize Israel and brand it as the pariah of the international community. They call for boycotts to promote their views and to isolate and cripple the Jewish state.

The boycott movement is well funded and well organized and operates on college campuses and in churches, organizations, businesses, and communities around the world. We dare not ignore how this creeping movement endangers the well-being and survival of Israel and future support for the Jewish state, especially among the younger generation.

The toxic boycott campaign threatens to embolden anti-Israel forces everywhere, especially on our college campuses. Students will continue to face a growing barrage of anti-Israel defamations on far too many campuses. Many will see displays that depict the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as inhumane brutes and that show the Israeli flag dripping with red paint to symbolize blood. They will hear Israel's self-defense policies equated with the 20th century's ugliest crimes, from Nazism to apartheid. (source)

Moral people everywhere must fight back with TRUTH. Steinberg and Edelstein stress the need to undermine the credibility and influence of BDSgroups:

To emerge victorious in this political war, the network must be armed with detailed information about the  opposition, and implement an effective counterstrategy. This involves distributing information to college students and active community members, so they can name and shame the groups that lead and fund demonization.

In 2001 at the UN World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, more than 1,500 anti-Israel NGOs adopted a plan of action that highlights the BDS movement… these groups exploited human right rhetoric and international legal claims to push this immoral objective.

…When the NGOs and BDSers invade campuses, Jewish students and local communities scramble to  respond. Similarly, when the demonizers publicize calls for boycotts at local food co-ops, the community responds…students and community groups must also adopt a proactive strategy to undermine the credibility and influence of these groups. This strategy will marginalize the BDS movement’s  central actors, and expose the lie that BDS is a grassroots protest against Israeli policy.

NGO Monitor has demonstrated that this approach can be very effective. Based on detailed research,  the government of Canada cut funding ostensibly provided for human rights and development, but which was actually used for hatred and incitement. Similar discussions are under way in European governments regarding funding for some of the more poisonous NGOs involved in BDS..

… Electronic Intifada is very active in BDS efforts, routinely abusing terms like “apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing.” Nigel Parry, a cofounder of EI, conflates victims of terror with terror leaders… Parry compared Israel’s targeted killing of Hamas head Ahmed Yassin to a “bus bombing.”

EI’s other founder, Ali Abunimah, who appears on campuses to promote BDS, calls for a one-state solution, meaning the elimination of Israel and compares Israel to Nazi Germany, referring to the Israeli press as “Der Sturmer.”

Other BDS groups must be exposed for their overtly anti-Semitic language. Leaders of Sabeel, a Palestinian Christian group, employ “Palestinian liberation theology,” which identifies Palestinians with Jesus and revives the concept of Jewish deicide for political gains. In an Easter message, Sabeel founder Naim Ateek told followers: “It seems to many of us that Jesus is on the cross again with thousands of crucified  Palestinians around him... The Israeli government crucifixion system is operating daily.”

… an expanded framework for combating the BDS movement will allow for the distinction between hard-core anti-Israel campaigners and those who have been persuaded to lend their names to this cause.
It is important to develop alliances with the latter group, including labor union members, Protestant churchgoers, students and university professors who will find the hatred that emanates from the demonizers repulsive. If we can convince these individuals to end their passive support for BDS, the NGOs that promote these campaigns will find themselves exposed as the fringe groups they really are.

Things you need to know about BDS

Melanie Phillips expands on what needs to be done:

…friends of Israel fret endlessly about whether or not Bibi will extend the moratorium on new building in the disputed territories, rather than ask the much more germane question of what the Palestinians are offering as an equivalent concession. The answer to that one, said Brett Stephens, is that they say they will keep the lid on terrorism. So their great concession is to stop killing Jews. Which kind of illustrates that, while the issue in contention for Israel is land, that for the Palestinians is mass murder.

But instead of accusing the Palestinians and their western supporters of this rejectionism - the true reason for the Middle East impasse - many self-professed "friends" of Israel position themselves on the very ground that Israel's enemies have chosen to conceal their real aim to obliterate it.

Hence the almost exclusive focus on the settlements and on Israel's supposed obduracy on these issues as the major obstacle to peace. This is demonstrably absurd. The only obstacle to peace is the Palestinians' continued and open refusal to accept the existence of Israel as a Jewish state, and thus their continued objective to wage a war of extermination against it.

… the whole issue of the settlements…is a giant red herring which has been swallowed wholesale by the west's Israel-bashers. But many in the pro-Israel camp have precisely the same preoccupation, obsessing about whether Israel is making enough concessions on the settlements.

Israel's defenders should be moving the conversation on to the subject of the ill treatment of the Palestinians by the rest of the Arab world - and towards each other.

I would go further. I would ask self-styled "progressives" who obsess about removing the settlers from the disputed territories why they promote an agenda of racist ethnic cleansing designed to remove every Jew from a putative state of Palestine - while Israel, whose Arab minority enjoys full civil rights, is excoriated for "apartheid".

Put the other side on the back foot where it belongs. Change the narrative.

So let’s all start confronting the LIES and standing up for TRUTH.
If we remain silent in the face of LIES, we will become slaves.
The TRUTH will set us free from from SHARIA!
