On April 11, 2011 the Australian Christian Nation Association organised a lecture in the Jubilee Hall of Parliament House in Sydney as part of their ongoing lectures informing the public on Islam and the west. The special guest speaker on this occasion was Father Paul Stenhouse, Catholic priest and world renowned Middle East scholar. There were people of many national backgrounds there, including Lebanese and Pakistani Christians and some ex Muslims.

Father Stenhouse began his talk by asking which country close to Australia has the most militant Islamist goals. Most answered ‘Indonesia’ but the few who answered ‘Malaysia’ were correct. Fr Stenhouse spoke of the DAWA aims of an organisation called RISEAP [Regional Islamic Da’wah Council for Southeast Asia and the Pacific ]– DAWA meaning the ‘soft sell’, of Islam in the region, a kind of missionary propaganda. The RISEAP webpage describes itself as follows :

The initiative to form the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) arose out of a conference that was jointly organized by the Muslim Welfare Organization of Malaysia (PERKIM) and Muslim World League (Rabitah al-Alam al-Islami) that was held in Kuala Lumpur from 11th to 14th January 1980. RISEAP holds regular conferences and to promote the ‘brotherhood’ and ‘aims of Islam’ and with topics such as Muslims in Multicultural Society which was hosted in Singapore on July 10-11, 2010 and had Tariq Ramadan as convenor. The conference website states:

Among the speakers were Ust. Fatris Bakaram, Deputy Mufti of Singapore, Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf, Imam, and Chairman of Cordoba Initiative, New York, USA, Prof. Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Studies, University of Oxford, UK, Prof. Sherman A. Jakson of University of Michigan, USA, Prof. Reuven Firestone of Jewish institute of Religion, USA and other speakers of various disciplines. There were about 200 delegates coming from various countries like USA, UK, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Mynamar, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. RISEAP’s members, associates and friends were also present namely Australian Federation of Islamic council, Japan Muslim Federation, Korea Muslim Federation, Islamic Religious Affairs Council, Myanmar. Stating that Malaysia’s Islamist expansion long predates the formation of RISEAP – Fr Stenhouse outlined the fact that most Westerners cannot understand that Jihad in Islamic thinking has a civil soft cell counterpart to Jihad and that RISEAP is an example of it. He said it was understood that Islamist groups from non Islamic countries will work in this way until the longer terms of Islam are achieved. He quoted Turkey’s PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying that ‘Democracy is like a street car. When you get to your destination you get off.’ The idea is to use the host society until Islam’s aims can be implemented.

And what kind of Islamic example does Malaysia portray? The reality is that the Malay, Indian, Chinese and Christian minorities suffer discrimination and their human right are constantly infringed. When Malaysian woman Lina Joy wanted to convert to Christianity from Islam, permission was denied and she and her fiancĂ© received death threats for which no protection was given. Fr Stenhouse noted that there are 56 minority sects of Islam in Malaysia which are regarded as ‘deviant’ and these Muslim minorities are regularly persecuted. The government may detail any Muslim or anyone who is thought to have infringed Sunni principles. Islam is the one and only religion of the Federation and any notion of western ‘multiculturalism’ is as far off the Malaysian radar as can be. Shariah courts now adjudicate supposed infringements of Indians, Malays and Christians. The civil court system has ceded its powers to the Shariah courts. Couples are fined for sitting too close to each other. Fr Stenhouse observed that everyone in the audience before him would be fined in Malaysia. There are religious police who control dress codes and women are not allowed to have short hair. The government tried to prevent a Christian group from using the word ‘Allah’ which they have been accustomed to do as there is no other word for the Almighty that could be used. This became a huge issue with Islamists arguing that ‘Allah’ was first used by Mohammed. Not true. Mohammad’s father’s name was Abdullah – and ‘Alla’ was already in this word, so the word ‘Allah’ was part of the pagan society at the time predating Islam.

Given the highly controlled society and restriction of human rights, it was decidedly strange to have Kevin Rudd as PM say in 2008 that democracy ‘was flourishing’ in Malaysia.

"Democracy is not just alive and well in Malaysia but flourishing," Mr Rudd said after meeting his Malaysian counterpart, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi. (source)

He must have been very badly advised. The Indian, Malay, Chinese, Christian and Muslim minorities could have informed him of the daily infringement of their human rights. Or else Mr Rudd is prey to propaganda. He is not alone is his rosy assessments which turn away from the stories of abuses of human rights in Malaysia. Hilary Clinton reached for waffle sphere in saying

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced to reporters on Friday that she had an “excellent meeting” with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the State Department. When she told Muhyiddin that Malaysia is “a model nation” that might serve as an example to other developing nation…” (source)

There comes a time when the realities that are ignored by leaders must be pointed out repeatedly by ordinary people through any means available. An ex Muslim in the audience stood and spoke and verified that the rosy picture shown by the Islamic ‘soft cell’ organisations is full of lies. The ex Muslim gave everyone to believe that the ‘myths’ of Islam will crack one day –[ just as the west finally saw through ‘friendly’ Joe Stalin who murdered 70 million people] and the stark stories of the victims of Islam will take centre stage as they should for any truly democratic country.
