April 2010 Dhimwit

E-mail Print PDF

It's not easy to select 3 candidates for Dhimwit, not because there's a scarcity, but rather there are so many to choose from: you can trawl universities, media outlets, politicians, religious leaders, members of the arts etc, and you'll find plenty.

So here are my 3 choices for April. I am always grateful for suggestions for future Dhimwits, so please keep the ideas rolling in.
 1. Simon Crean, for promoting Sharia Finance in Australia

What is Crean's reason for pushing Islamic finance?
“The big opportunity is in Islamic finance because there is a whole population out there that is based on Islamic law.”

By that logic, we should introduce stoning to death for adultery, killing homosexuals and infidels who won't convert, and reintroduce slavery to cater for the "whole population out there that is based on Islamic law.”

See Dave Clark's article "Demystifying Sharia finance in Australia" for a clear explanation of why we need sharia like a hole in the head. Crean would certainly benefit from reading it, as he seems unaware that Islamic finance was a recent invention by Sayyib Qutb, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, in order to finance the global jihad.

But presumably that's OK with our Simon.

A Media Release "Landmark Islamic finance publication " explains:

Trade Minister Simon Crean launched the Australian Government's first-ever comprehensive publication on Islamic finance, explaining the opportunities that booming Shariah-compliant investment and banking offers Australia's financial services sector.

Australia is well positioned to service almost 1 billion Muslims who live in the Asia-Pacific region and to tap into petrodollar liquidity.

“Islamic financing is a crucial plank in the Government's strategy to make Australia a financial hub in the Asia Pacific region,” Mr Crean said.

“There is huge potential in Islamic financing which is estimated to be worth more than A$1 trillion (US$822 billion) and has grown at 10 per cent per annum for the past decade.”

“Islamic financing is a booming sector and Australia should be part of the action.”

Coinciding with the launch of Austrade's Islamic Finance publication is the launch of Westpac's Special Interbank Placement for Islamic institutions, which is a welcome development.

Westpac will offer a short term wholesale investment structure for Islamic institutions based on the buying and selling of commodities.

“The continued growth in major Asian economies will create a need for resources-related services and infrastructure, which are ideal assets for forms of Islamic financing,” Crean said.

Key opportunities for the Islamic finance industry include:

    * attracting Islamic banks to establish operations in Australia;
    * Australian-based banks providing Shariah-compliant investment and financing products across the Asia Pacific and Gulf regions;
    * Shariah-compliant managed funds; and
    * attracting investment in Australian assets and business from overseas Shariah investors (source)

Yes, that's a good way to ensure the collapse of our economic system, which is of course the idea of sharia!

At the launch of Austrade's publication on Islamic finance, Crean might not have bowed in Obama fashion, but nonetheless made obeisance to Arabia a priority:

And I'd like to give a warm welcome to the visiting Islamic finance delegation from the United Arab Emirates.

I am also pleased to be here for the launch of Westpac Institutional Bank's Special Interbank Placement for Islamic institutions – a solution specifically developed for Islamic investors.

Islamic or Shariah-compliant finance offers significant investment opportunities for the Australian financial services industry and a competitive source of offshore capital.

As Trade Minister, I have taken a great interest in promoting the expansion of Shariah-compliant finance into Australia, as part of a push to elevate Australia's sophisticated, efficient and highly skilled financial sector to the world stage.

Sharia is good for Australia, Simon Says.
It is certainly good for Islam, and that's enough for dhimmi Crean!

2. Vic Police, for denigrating our Judeo-Christian culture, while elevating Islam

Readers may remember that at a rally for Gaza in Melbourne last year, a little hijabed tot could be seen holding up a banner calling for genocide of Jews. Unbelievable that anyone (except Hamas, which regularly abuses kids in this way) would use a child to carry a sign urging genocide. Standing next to her were two adults, a Muslim man and what was presumably a woman, clothed completely in black with slits for eyes. (see Tot calls for Genocide)

What action did Vic Police take about this egregious example of race hate and incitement to kill?
Despite many requests from diverse sectors of the community, under sensitivity-trained Simon Overland, Vic Police did NOTHING!

Fast forward to 2010:

During Easter weekend, a church group decided to stage a Crucifixion re-enactment in Geelong, and guess what: the Police immediately leapt in to shut it down:

Police say the performance was offensive and there had been complaints. But pastor Sarah Kenneally, of the Heaven on Earth Church in Norlane, said police had just yanked out their microphone and brought the performance to a premature end on Saturday.

The Jesus figure - fitness adviser Leigh Clough - was hanging from the cross smeared with fake blood, and the re-enactment was timed to attract the attention of Easter Saturday shoppers. However, police said the realistic display had frightened children.

''The closing down of the display was not about religious beliefs. It was due to numerous complaints from the public regarding offensive behaviour,'' a police spokeswoman said.

Mr Clough said he had been on the cross to remind people of what Easter was all about and it was disappointing the message was cut short.

''We celebrate Easter and we take the weekend off because of it, but I think our society is becoming less and less aware of why we do the things we do,'' he told The Age.

''We were just bringing the Easter message to the people, and it is a happy message.''

Ms Kenneally said: ''We were not trying to cause any trouble, but they threatened to fine us unless we stopped. We stopped and asked them what offence we were committing, and they said technically we were not breaking the law. (source)

So why was the Christian re-enactment shut down and the Islamic one ignored?
Remember, the police admitted the Christians were not breaking the law, nor were they inciting hatred against anyone. By contrast, the Muslims were breaking the law by inciting genocide, a very serious crime.

The local paper reported:

GEELONG police shut down a bloody re-enactment of Jesus on the cross on Saturday afternoon, deeming it too offensive for public viewing.

It featured two women mourners in black and a semi-naked ``Jesus'' covered in fake blood ``crucified'' on a large wooden cross.

``We were pretty disappointed the police did it the way they did it,'' Pastor Sarah Kenneally said. ``They didn't talk to us first, they just came and yanked the cord out of our amp and said we had to stop.

Louise Bridges slammed the performance, calling it an ``absolutely disgusting stunt''. She had picked her six-year-old son up from a party at Time Zone, and said her son was very disturbed and wasn't able to differentiate between real and fake blood.

``It was in your face. Coming out of either shopping centre you just couldn't avoid it, I was horrified. My son was worried they were really hurting (Jesus) because he was covered in blood and moaning and calling out ``why, why''. (source)

OK, maybe this display was tacky, but Australia is predominantly a Christian country and it was the Easter weekend. Hard to believe that kids did not realise this was a re-enactment, not actual violence. Kids aren't that dumb!

So for the differential treatment of Christianity and Islam, Vic Police deserve the nomination of Dhimwit.

3. Murdoch University, Western Australia, for contributing to the Flight of the Intellectuals
(for the meaning of this, read Bonfire of the Intellectuals)

The university recently hosted a National Symposium on Racism, whose stated aim was "to revisit experiences and discuss anti-racism leadership and practice in order to develop practical solutions to advance the fight against racism in Australia." The main themes and issues were:

1: Talking About Race - Community Voices on Experiences of Racism
        • Voices of new and emerging communities in Australia
        • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People's Voices
        • Engaging honest conversations about systemic racism
2: Dissecting Social Cohesion - Islamophobia, Racism and Marginalization
3: Racism and the Entertainment Media

Two things immediately spring to mind:
the Symposium is premised on Australia being racist
Islam is positioned as the victim, not the perpetrator, of racism.

The speakers were united in their eagerness in lecturing us on our racism, especially how culturally insensitive we were towards Islam. (reference)

Hanifa Deen's abstract " Living in the Shadow of Hostility: Australian Muslim Responses", left no doubt as to its contents:

Until the first Gulf War in 1991, anti-islamic prejudice did not occupy public space; for the most part such sentiments were not respectable. During this period our political leaders reacted swiftly to isolated episodes where buses were stoned and some Muslims abused and called traitor. Unions, churches, universities, human rights organisations and other institutions around Australia made clear unequivocal statements, in a united front, in defence of Muslims and Arabs. The bigots and tabloid media were told 'leave our Muslims and Arabs alone, they are Australians.' However, the world trade centre tragedy on 11 September 2001 and subsequent terrorist attacks marked a watershed in how Australian Muslims were perceived by their fellow citizens. Today everyone has an opinion about Muslims; language has changed and mindsets hardened. Muslims have graduated into 'a problem' with potential enemy status and the term 'islamophobia' is part of our lexicon. September 11 became a defining moment in the lives of Muslims and Arabs in Australia.

This presentation discusses how Australian Muslims are managing-or mismanaging-the fall out from this crisis... and the problems caused by social distance, traditional leadership and entrenched feelings of victimisation. The author suggests that many of the strategies used during the social justice and anti-racist movements of the 1980s are relevant in combating hate speech in the 21st century.

Professor Kevin M. Dunn's abstract was "Racism and Anglo privilege in Australia"

The denial of racism is a familiar hallmark of contemporary racism, for some scholars denial is a defining criteria of what has been called the New Racism. Data from the Challenging Racism Project provides a clear picture on the extent of public acknowledgement of racism and of Anglo cultural privilege. Encouragingly, most Australians recognise that racism is a problem in Australian society, although a little under half deny that there is Anglo cultural privilege. These levels of acknowledgement do not align with the position of most Australian political leaders, where denial is overwhelming. Confronting the official denial and downplaying of racism is a first order issue for the development of anti-racism policy. This requires political leadership. Victims of racism and their representative organisations have demanded positive leadership, and they have justifiably called for protection from vilification and attack....a useful primary step would be a public campaign that acknowledges the seriousness of racism as a structural cause of public disorder.

Professor Andrew Jakubowicz's Abstract was: Race, Media and Cultural Identities in Australia

The Australian media do a lot of "work" on race relations - firstly they ensure that there is very little presence of people of colour, what Canadians refer to as "visibly different" anywhere in the media landscape. Indeed if we want to discover where the daily media narrative delivers on Australia's cultural diversity, it's most likely to be in the news (where the issues are threats of violence or sports superstars) or in sporting coverage.

When the "visibly different" are allowed in they tend to be shown as caricatures - Black Face on Hey hey it's Saturday; as sound and movement in advertising (eg the KFC kerfuffle); or as the Chinky Chinese cook in Buz Luhrmann's "Australia".

Strategies to engage with this problem (and its appalling social consequences of prejudice, ignorance and violence), need to encompass the ALP arts and culture policy, support for independent reviews of the media industry practices, and the building of lobby groups.

Dr Shakira Hussein's Abstract was: Muslim women in Australia: when racism reinforces misogyny (and vice versa...)

Muslim gender norms are frequently cited as "unAustralian", as incompatible with "our values", as displaying a reluctance to "fit in". Although cloaked as a concern for Muslim women and girls, such pseudo-feminism is often thinly disguised racism directed at Muslims in general. Muslim women have sought to repudiate such racism by highlighting Muslim female achievement and success. However, many women remain dissatisfed with gender norms within their own communities, even as they point out that the experience of gender-based oppression is neither universal among, nor particular to, Muslim women. Muslim women face a dilemna when "speaking out" about either racism or misogyny, since virtually anything they say may be appropriated by "the other side".

Ms Yvonne Henderson's Abstract was: Tackling Racism through Substantive Equality

Focusing on systemic racism acknowledges that racism has become embedded, often unwittingly... and recognises that a systemic response is required. Such systemic racism permeates society and the structures of officialdom, and as such challenges how equality of opportunity works in practice, now made specific in the statement "If you want to treat me equally, you may have to be prepared to treat me differently".

The Policy Framework for Substantive Equality presents a policy and methodology to assist major State Government Departments identify and address systemic barriers to service delivery, enabling them to move towards meeting the needs of diverse Indigenous and ethnic minority populations; in essence substantive equality. (source)

These abstracts should give you an insight into the Symposium's intent, and I'm sure you'll agree, merits Murdoch University's inclusion as a candidate for Dhimwit.

History - Violent Jihad

Australians celebrate and revere Anzac Day on April 25th each year in remembrance of our brave soldiers who fought in two great world wars to secure our freedom. Every Australian identifies with the slogan “lest we forget” and in services held around the country people reflect on the battles and men who died to secure our freedom. Yet across the world in France, there is one remarkable battle which helped form the Europe we know today and allowed the development of civilization based on Judeo Christian principles. This one famous battle has become known as the battle of Tours and effectively stopped the Muslim advance into Europe. After the death of Mohammed in 632AD, Muslim armies exploded out of the Arabian peninsula to conquer much of the Middle East, expanding across north Africa. From there they crossed into Spain in 711AD and eventually controlled much of al-Andalus by 715AD. It was the victory at Tours by Charles Martel that stemmed the tide and eventually the Muslim marauders were expelled from Spain in 1492 when the last outpost at Granada fell to King Ferdinand of Spain.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born, lived, fought and won battles against religious and social oppression in the 17th century Bharat or India. He was a shining star in the Indian firmament and is renowned as a champion of the downtrodden and depressed masses. He was and continues to be an icon for the classes and masses alike and is seen as a rallying point for peasants oppressed by foreign rulers, Pathans and Moghuls alike. Sexually exploited women found in Shivaji Raje a protector, a benefactor and flocked to his Hindavi Swaraj to find solace and feel liberated under his saffron flag.

Perhaps some readers might be interested to know that January 28 is considered a feast day among Catholics – actually 2 feast days are celebrated on the same day – one is of ST Thomas Aquinas, the great medieval theologian and philosopher who adapted Aristotle to the western Judeo-Christian worldview. . It is also the feast day of a lesser known person – St Peter Nolasco, the great ransomer of captives from the Muslims.

Barbary Corsair
Somalian Islamic Pirates & Lessons from History

The dramatic rescue of the American cargo-ship captain Richard Phillips from the hands of Somalian Islamic pirates by the U.S. Navy—killing three pirates, holding him hostage at gun-point, through precision-targeting—warrants a review of the U.S. struggle with piracy and hostage-taking in North Africa, which ended two centuries ago.

Raiding trade-caravans and hostage-taking for extracting ransom in Islam was started by Prophet Muhammad. Having become powerful and secure after his relocation to Medina from Mecca in 622, Muhammad initiated Jihad or holy war in the form of raids of trade-caravans for earning livelihood for his community. In the first successful raid of a Meccan caravan at Nakhla in December 623, his brigands killed one of the attendants, took two of them captive, and acquired the caravan as “sacred” booty. The captives were ransomed to generate further revenue. Muhammad, later on, expanded this mode of Jihad to raiding non-Muslim communities around Arabia—for capturing their homes, properties and livestock, capturing their women and children as slaves often for ransoming and selling, and imposing extortional taxes—which sometimes involved mass-slaughter of the attacked victims.

Battle of Broken Hill Logo

The First Islamic Terrorist Attack on Australian Soil

On January 1, 1915 two Broken Hill men, both former camel drivers, armed themselves with rifles, an homemade flag bearing Islamic insignia and a large supply of ammunition and launched a surprise attack on the Picnic Train about 3 kilometres outside Broken Hill.

The train carried about 1200 Broken Hill residents to Silverton where a picnic to celebrate the new year was to take place.

The two Muslim men, Gool Mohamed originally a Pashtun tribesman from Afghanistan and Mullah Abdullah from what is known today as Pakistan, decided to wage jihad against Australian infidels after Australia and the Ottoman Empire officially joined the opposite sides in the WWI.

Alhambra - GazelleHow often in conversation with a Muslim, do they quote Spain as the crowning achievement of Islam, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in harmony for about 800 years?

And when you mention the killings and massacres, you are told that the Spanish Inquisition was much worse.
This is a misconception, since the Inquisition in Spain was responsible for only between 4,000 and 5,000 lives. [1]

Yet in 1066AD, in a single day, muslims murdered over 4,000 Jews because Vizier Joseph ibn Naghrela had risen to a position greater than them, and of course, this upset the Muslim sensitivities. [2]

History - Imperialism

Decisive Victory for the West

At this time of year, it is timely to remember one of the greatest victories of the west against the Islamic world. On the 7th October in 1571, Don Juan and the Holy League, led by Admiral Doria, defeated the larger Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto, saving Europe from the Turks and militant Islam. The Holy League was a coalition of different armies - of the Republic of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain (including Naples, Sicily and Sardinia), the Republic of Genoa, the Duchy of Savoy, the Knights Hospitaller and some others.

Jerusalem - Coat of ArmsWhy do Muslims insist that Jerusalem is their Holy City?
When Mohamed and his faithful followers moved from Mecca to Medina, they found themselves among three Jewish tribes/clans (BANU-L-NADIR, BANU KAINUKA and BANU KURAIZA)  which settled there some time after their expulsion from their homeland and also living there were  two Arab, pagan tribes.

Mohammed, who at this stage needed more followers, decided to win those tribes over and convert them to his newly invented religion.

Islam was yet not as fully developed as we know it today, and Mohammed was still having his sessions with Allah (the Medina period revelations).
