Obama, Egypt and Waleed

E-mail Print PDF
Ramadan's Clone Waleed Aly is impressed with Obama and his attempts to  “heal America's relationship with the Muslim world.”
Speculating about his projected speech in Egypt, he feels that if Obama wants to win over the Muslim world, he must win over Egypt., and considers the most difficult challenge to be:
“how Obama handles America's alliance with the Egyptian Government. Hosni Mubarak's regime is the second-largest recipient of US foreign aid. It also stifles democracy, has a poor human rights record and is deeply unpopular among its own people…The implications of these facts are obvious to most Egyptians: only American support allows the regime to survive. That sits at odds with America's consistent discourse of support for democracy and freedom. It partly explains the visceral backlash against the Iraq war: explaining why one country needed to be invaded in the cause of democracy, while another thoroughly undemocratic country enjoyed generous support.
So, Obama is faced with two irreconcilable imperatives. Courting Egyptians is not the same thing as courting their Government. In a stroke he could win masses of Muslim hearts by making American support for the Mubarak regime conditional on Egypt respecting the civil rights of its citizens and allowing an unfettered political opposition. That would, however, cost America an ally and risk the emergence of a new, less compliant and less predictable Egyptian government. It would also require Obama to insult his hosts. (source)

Although the U.S. is officially “friends” with Egypt and Saudi Arabia, their textbooks and media continue to broadcast content vilifying the U.S., Israel and Jews. Just a few examples from www.theisraelproject.org:

  • Saudi Arabia’s school textbooks indoctrinate students to hate, according to a 2008 report by the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, with statements such as: “Every religion other than Islam is false;” “The Jews and Christians are enemies of the believers;” “Only through force and victory over the enemies is there security and repose;” “The apes are Jews, the people of the Sabbath; while the swine are Christians, the infidels of the communion of Jesus.”  ( see also this reference)

  • A Saudi Cleric Who Taught in U.S said On Al-Majd TV: 'Allah Be Praised, America Is Collapsing'; 'Will The West Acknowledge the Collapse of Capitalism[?]... They Have Begun to Adopt the Principles of Islamic Economy'; 'Either They [The U.S.] Were Accomplices In 9/11, Or Else They Carried It Out'.” (reference)

Who needs enemies with friends like this?

While I agree with Wal that democracy and human rights are stifled in Egypt, I wonder if his concerns extend to the freedom of religion and from oppression of minorities living in Islamic lands.

Who then are these minorities?
Egypt's religious minorities in 1990 included approximately 350,000 adherents of the Greek Orthodox Church, 175,000 Eastern and Latin Rite Catholics, 200,000 Protestants, and fewer than 1,000 Jews. Most members of the Greek Orthodox were of Greek origin, but followers also included Arabs, Armenians, and the affiliated Coptic Orthodox Church.
Approximately 85 percent of all Catholics in Egypt belonged to the Coptic Catholic Church. Other Catholics included followers of the Armenian, Chaldean, Greek, Latin, Maronite, and Syrian rites. There were also numerous Protestant churches. The Anglican Church in Egypt was part of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. Other Protestant churches included the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East, and the Coptic Evangelical Church. (source)
Let’s spare a thought for the Copts, the indigenous people of Egypt:
Christian Copts of California (CCC), an organization representing expatriate Egyptians of the ancient Coptic minority, has written an urgent letter to the American leader reminding him that "reconciliation cannot be separated from reciprocation."
While "it is crucial for the USA to listen to the Islamic World's point of view," writes Mounir Bishay, " it is equally crucial for them to listen to America's point of view. Historically the USA has done sufficient favors for the Muslim World to earn respect rather than such vehement hatred."
Muslims in America live with "no restrictions on their religious practices and they are free to expend efforts to convert as many Americans as they can to Islam. Mosques, Islamic centers and schools are freely built all over the country. Such freedoms are most definitely not offered to those of other faiths within the boundaries of the Islamic World."

According to Jim Jacobson, president of Christian Freedom International, "When it comes to human rights and the treatment of minority Christians, Egypt has an extremely poor track record. We hope the President uses the opportunity to speak out for persecuted, minority Christians in Egypt."
In Egypt, Islam, the official state religion, is the primary authority for legislation. Estimates of the number of Christians range from 10 to 15 million, out of a total of 79 million. Most Christian Egyptians are members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which predates the Islamic conquest of the region by hundreds of years. (source)

Well, we can hope Obama stands up for American values, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. After all, he’s going there to please his Muslim hosts and he can only do this by deferring to Islam.Coptic Rights

And what of the Jews, once numerous in Egyptian society? Azza Khattab tells of two Jews who converted to Islam:
AS FAR AS ALBERT ARIE is concerned, only archaeologists and historians should be writing about Egypt’s Jews. “Lately, everyone seems to be excited about the Jews of Egypt. Why? Did people just wake up and realize, now that there are no more Jews, that they should write about them? “

Arie was born a Jew in Cairo to a Turkish father at a time when Downtown was the playground of well-off foreigners and ethnic minorities. Like other converts to Islam, he has no interest in discussing the details of his conversion.

Egypt’s Jews were a reflection of the broader society, Arie recalls. There were those who had completely integrated, adopting the dress and language of their lower- and middle-class Muslim neighbors. Others, the urbane, foreign-educated polyglots… founded or managed major companies, served in parliament and became cabinet ministers.
“The regime considered the Jews part of the system, and they in turn were loyal and integrated,” Arie says. (source)
Rami Mangoubi writes movingly about the Jews of Egypt:

While Jews in the twentieth centuries had cordial, warm and unforgettable relations with many other Egyptians, they still experienced suffering and exclusion. Historically and through the middle of the nineteenth century, they, along with Christians, were tolerated as Ahl el Zemma, or Dhimmi, shown condescending mercy provided they did not contest the inferior social and legal status imposed on them.
Shortly after Khedewi Said ordered the emancipation of Jews and Christians from the Dhimmi status in the middle of the nineteenth century, and cancelled the guizyeh, new and increasingly dangerous forms of marginalization and exclusion started to appear…nationality decrees were interpreted so as to deny Jews Egyptian citizenship. As a result, more than 90 percent of Egyptian Jews were denied citizenship, regardless of how many centuries they resided in Egypt.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, accusations of ritual murders were also common in Egypt … two massacres of Egyptian Jews occurred during the Summer and Fall of 1948, shortly after the Egyptian army invaded Israel…Between 1967 and 1970 there was the incarceration and torture of nearly all Egyptian Jewish males, in the notorious detention camps of Abu Za’abal and Tura. Nearly all were freed only on condition they leave the country, never to return.
We never dared discuss such matters in Egypt, and when pressured to talk to the press, Egyptian Jews had to claim that all was well.

The absence of any honest discussion of taboo subjects like Israel or the fate of Egyptian Jewry only reflects poorly on the country. Regrettably, in today’s Egypt, it is more common to hear Holocaust denial by high profile personalities like Mohamed Mahdi Akef, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. (source)
Expelled JewsTrudy Rubin talks about the once fabulous Jewish community of Alexandria:
I met Mr. T. and his friends in a small cafe on one of the main shopping streets of Alexandria.
"Life here used to be marvellous. There were always parties and dances. We socialized much in the Jewish community, but we were also invited to Italians and French and Greeks and Arabs, Christians and Moslems…. They were all our friends.
"Now there are no more parties. Most of the foreign communities are gone. We are the only ones left. After 1967 most of our Arab friends stopped inviting us.

Alexandria’s Jewish community community dates back to the Ptolemaic era, around the time of Christ.
In the 1930's the city held 30-40,000 Jews. Today there are 200 left.
The Jews of Egypt — about 500 souls — are but a tiny remnant of a once wealthy and powerful community. Those who remain, nearly all elderly and most now retired, live on their memories.
In 1952, a wave of nationalist Xenophobia swept Cairo and many big shops and a hotel were burned down during a rampage known as the 'Cairo fire'. The Jews… were one of the targets of this rage. But the wave passed, and King Farouk reimbursed property owners for damages. However, in July 1952, the Free Officers Movement, including the then unknown Nasser, overthrew King Farouk. At this point many wealthy Jews began to leave.
By 1967 about 5,000 Jews were left in Egypt. The Six Day War spelled the virtual end of the community. (source)
But who cares about the Jews or the Christians? Even the Copts are a small minority and have no power. Waleed’s disdain for Mubarak's regime, which “stifles democracy, has a poor human rights record and is deeply unpopular among its own people,” is clear. Who then does he refer to as “allowing an unfettered political opposition” which will show “support for democracy and freedom” and “court Egyptians?” Surely he can’t mean the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), the Islamist organisation known for its extremism and links to terrorism. In 2005 they were prevented from running for parliamentary elections as a political party. But their candidates, running as independents, won 88 seats out of a total 454, making them by far the largest opposition group (other parties won 14 seats). (reference)

But who else is a feasible opposition in Egypt?
How can a moderate Muslim (as Waleed is) support a movement like the MB?

And does Obama support the MB? One website, creepingsharia, believes he does:-

It pointed out that Obama’s speech to ‘the Muslim world’ on Al-Arabiya distinguished between organizations like al Qaeda that espouse violence, and “people who may disagree with my administration and certain actions, or may have a particular viewpoint in terms of how their countries should develop.”

Subsequently MB posted an article suggesting that they were among such groups. The writer stated that “Islamist groups and parties, the vast majority of whom are both nonviolent and committed to the democratic process, organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt” fitted the bill as “nonviolent groups which may dislike or even hate American policies, but are legitimate political actors with large constituencies, massive grassroots support, and religious legitimacy.”

Creepingsharia points out:
The American policies Islamist groups hate include most of our democratic principles, which they would replace with sharia law…. Yet commentary from a U.S.-based group that supposedly espouses democracy attempts to legitimize groups that openly seek to destroy the U.S.!  The Ikhwan (MB) penned a lengthy memo on ‘the General Strategic Goal for the Brotherhood in North America‘:
The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions. Without this level of understanding, we are not up to this challenge and have not prepared ourselves for Jihad yet. It is a Muslim’s destiny to perform Jihad and work wherever he is and wherever he lands until the final hour comes, and there is no escape from that destiny except for those who chose to slack. But, would the slackers and the Mujahedeen be equal. (source)
So it seems that both Obama and Waleed Aly support the Muslim Brotherhood.
And the Muslim Brotherhood wants to destroy Western civilisation.
How safe does that make you feel?

History - Violent Jihad

Australians celebrate and revere Anzac Day on April 25th each year in remembrance of our brave soldiers who fought in two great world wars to secure our freedom. Every Australian identifies with the slogan “lest we forget” and in services held around the country people reflect on the battles and men who died to secure our freedom. Yet across the world in France, there is one remarkable battle which helped form the Europe we know today and allowed the development of civilization based on Judeo Christian principles. This one famous battle has become known as the battle of Tours and effectively stopped the Muslim advance into Europe. After the death of Mohammed in 632AD, Muslim armies exploded out of the Arabian peninsula to conquer much of the Middle East, expanding across north Africa. From there they crossed into Spain in 711AD and eventually controlled much of al-Andalus by 715AD. It was the victory at Tours by Charles Martel that stemmed the tide and eventually the Muslim marauders were expelled from Spain in 1492 when the last outpost at Granada fell to King Ferdinand of Spain.

He was and continues to be an icon for the classes and masses alike and is seen as a rallying point for peasants oppressed by foreign rulers, Pathans and Moghuls alike. Sexually exploited women found in Shivaji Raje a protector, a benefactor and flocked to his Hindavi Swaraj to find solace and feel liberated under his saffron flag.

Perhaps some readers might be interested to know that January 28 is considered a feast day among Catholics – actually 2 feast days are celebrated on the same day – one is of ST Thomas Aquinas, the great medieval theologian and philosopher who adapted Aristotle to the western Judeo-Christian worldview. . It is also the feast day of a lesser known person – St Peter Nolasco, the great ransomer of captives from the Muslims.

Barbary Corsair
Somalian Islamic Pirates & Lessons from History

The dramatic rescue of the American cargo-ship captain Richard Phillips from the hands of Somalian Islamic pirates by the U.S. Navy—killing three pirates, holding him hostage at gun-point, through precision-targeting—warrants a review of the U.S. struggle with piracy and hostage-taking in North Africa, which ended two centuries ago.

Raiding trade-caravans and hostage-taking for extracting ransom in Islam was started by Prophet Muhammad. Having become powerful and secure after his relocation to Medina from Mecca in 622, Muhammad initiated Jihad or holy war in the form of raids of trade-caravans for earning livelihood for his community. In the first successful raid of a Meccan caravan at Nakhla in December 623, his brigands killed one of the attendants, took two of them captive, and acquired the caravan as “sacred” booty. The captives were ransomed to generate further revenue. Muhammad, later on, expanded this mode of Jihad to raiding non-Muslim communities around Arabia—for capturing their homes, properties and livestock, capturing their women and children as slaves often for ransoming and selling, and imposing extortional taxes—which sometimes involved mass-slaughter of the attacked victims.

Battle of Broken Hill Logo

The First Islamic Terrorist Attack on Australian Soil

On January 1, 1915 two Broken Hill men, both former camel drivers, armed themselves with rifles, an homemade flag bearing Islamic insignia and a large supply of ammunition and launched a surprise attack on the Picnic Train about 3 kilometres outside Broken Hill.

The train carried about 1200 Broken Hill residents to Silverton where a picnic to celebrate the new year was to take place.

The two Muslim men, Gool Mohamed originally a Pashtun tribesman from Afghanistan and Mullah Abdullah from what is known today as Pakistan, decided to wage jihad against Australian infidels after Australia and the Ottoman Empire officially joined the opposite sides in the WWI.

Alhambra - GazelleHow often in conversation with a Muslim, do they quote Spain as the crowning achievement of Islam, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in harmony for about 800 years?

And when you mention the killings and massacres, you are told that the Spanish Inquisition was much worse.
This is a misconception, since the Inquisition in Spain was responsible for only between 4,000 and 5,000 lives. [1]

Yet in 1066AD, in a single day, muslims murdered over 4,000 Jews because Vizier Joseph ibn Naghrela had risen to a position greater than them, and of course, this upset the Muslim sensitivities. [2]

History - Imperialism

Decisive Victory for the West

At this time of year, it is timely to remember one of the greatest victories of the west against the Islamic world. On the 7th October in 1571, Don Juan and the Holy League, led by Admiral Doria, defeated the larger Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto, saving Europe from the Turks and militant Islam. The Holy League was a coalition of different armies - of the Republic of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain (including Naples, Sicily and Sardinia), the Republic of Genoa, the Duchy of Savoy, the Knights Hospitaller and some others.

Jerusalem - Coat of ArmsWhy do Muslims insist that Jerusalem is their Holy City?
When Mohamed and his faithful followers moved from Mecca to Medina, they found themselves among three Jewish tribes/clans (BANU-L-NADIR, BANU KAINUKA and BANU KURAIZA)  which settled there some time after their expulsion from their homeland and also living there were  two Arab, pagan tribes.

Mohammed, who at this stage needed more followers, decided to win those tribes over and convert them to his newly invented religion.

Islam was yet not as fully developed as we know it today, and Mohammed was still having his sessions with Allah (the Medina period revelations).
