Dubai – Paradise for Aussies?

E-mail Print PDF
David HeffermanA few weeks ago (31st January: The Age Good Weekend) in “Strangers in a Strange Land”, Jane Cadzow was mesmerising us with tales of Aussie expats who had made good in Dubai. There was David Heffernan, who has built an engineering business valued at more than $100 million.  Cadzow reports that:
…an estimated 15,000 Australians have followed Heffernan. Some work for the 600 Australian companies that have opened offices in Dubai. Others, like Heffernan, are entrepreneurial types who have come to share in the spoils of one of the greatest building booms the world has seen “In the history of humanity, it is unprecedented,” says Soheil Abedian, a property developer who’s made the move from the Gold Coast… Even when the global economic meltdown is dramatically slowing Dubai’s growth, and development companies such as Abedian’s Sunland Group have put some major construction projects on hold, the futuristic metropolis rising out of the desert has the aura of a 21st century El Dorado.
I would certainly agree with Abedian that the building boom is unprecedented, but would add “in the history of inhumanity”, as it is built on the backs of slavery and oppression.

AbedianAnother Aussie made good is Donna Benton, originally from Melbourne:-
“Benton got off the plane with just $3,000 to her name. Eight years later, she has a thriving publishing business and bulging real-estate portfolio. Her latest acquisition is a villa with a pool overlooking a golf course in one of the most expensive parts of Dubai. “I’ve bought three properties here and four in Australia” she says. At only 34, Benton employs three household staff: a maid, a driver, and a full-time beautician.

Benton’s maid comes from the Philippines, as does her beautician. “Filipinas are great,” Benton says. “They’re clean, they’re tidy, they’re organised. People think, ‘Gosh, you don’t pay them very much’, but the average would get $500 to $600 a month plus their accommodation. And we pay for food. I mean, in their country, they’d be getting $200 a month.”

Now no one can deny that Benton has been successful, if by that you mean acquiring lots of material possessions – 7 properties and three servants. And that’s what the servants are – possessions.

Benton benefits from an enormous salary and apparently has little qualms that non-whites are poorly paid. Sounds like apartheid-era South Africa to me, where whites had servants who were often separated from their own families to pander to the white family’s every need.

Why is it all right to pay staff lower rates because they are Filipinas, Indians or Pakistanis?

Of course, we know Arabs are top of the pecking order, but whites get paid much more than non-whites, even if they do the same job. In Australia, that would be illegal and it is extremely racist. Imagine the outrage if say, an Indian checkout girl was paid less than her Australian counterpart.

The $975 million Palazzo Versace hotel that Sunland is scheduled to open next year will have an artificially chilled Donna Bentonswimming pool and a private beach where guests may not have to worry about scorching the soles of their feet. “We will suck the heat out of the sand to keep it cool enough to lie on” Abedian recently told London’s Sunday Times, explaining that he hoped to achieve this by piping iced water just beneath the surface. The newspaper also reported on a plan to use giant fans to waft a refreshing breeze over swimmers and sunbathers.

Environmentalists were appalled, pointing out that power consumption in Dubai was already off the charts. “Dubai is like a bubble world where the things that are worrying the rest of the world, like climate change, are simply ignored so that people can continue their destructive life-styles,” said Rachel Noble of Tourism Concern, a UK organisation that promotes ethical travel. Abedian, suitably chastened, claims now that “we will only do it if it is environmentally sustainable.”

What appalling environmental vandalism! Even more appalling is that such excesses go virtually without censure, while we in the free world are constantly being berated for causing catastrophic climate change with our messy carbon footprints.

How could anyone who cares about our planet set foot in Dubai or even support Emirates, when they are so profligate in their use of the world’s resources? Or do they get a free pass because we must never offend Muslims?

Why the double standard for Islamic countries? Surely if climate change is a global phenomenon, we must all do our bit, even Muslims.
David Heffernan describes Sheik Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai as “an extremely visionary individual” and has no objection to living under a benevolent despot: “Some people say a good dictatorship is better than a bad democracy, don’t they?”

Well, some people might say that. But why does Heffernan think Maktoum is a good dictator? After all,
in an action filed in the United States, he was accused of abducting, trafficking and enslaving thousands
of young children for camel races. Other counts against the Sheikh included engaging in slavery, engaging
in or facilitating child labour, battery, assault, infliction of emotional distress and wrongful death.

Dubai’s human rights record is appalling, yet paradoxically it is Israel and the West who are constantly accused of  (trumped up) human rights failures. An example is Durban I, where human rights abusing countries sat in judgment on Israel, which, despite facing jihadis from all sides determined to wipe the country off the map, upholds the highest ethical standards.

Personally, I prefer a democracy like Australia, however flawed, where there is equality for all and slavery is outlawed. And however benevolent a dictator may seem, a reversal in fortune usually finds him seeking scapegoats, often those who have benefitted under his benevolence. But more of this in my next article “Dubai – Paradise Lost for Aussies.”

After the $36 million party thrown last November to launch the Atlantis resort, one analyst observed
“This has been the most spectacular spending mission on earth. But it’s a mirage. If complex debt structures have brought the financial world to its knees, Dubai is the world’s biggest toxic time bomb.”
This analyst is right on the money - watch how many of those Aussie companies survive the meltdown and how many expats come scurrying back home.etheridge.jpg

And remember, under a dictatorship, the ruler can seize any assets he chooses to. Let’s see how quickly Maktoum morphs into Mugabe!
Colin Bramson, who publishes a blog called Life in Dubai, worries about the huge discrepancy in pay rates for Western and Asian expatriates. In his appartment block, a cleaner lives in the “utility room” – not much more than a broom cupboard, is paid a pittance and has seen his family only once in three years.
At last, a man with a conscience! (Though one has to ask why he is still in Dubai?)

All Australians who have been brought up in the Judeo-Christian tradition on which our democracy is based should be horrified at this discriminatory treatment and should vow never to set foot in Dubai.
Real estate consultant Morgan Etheridge was shocked when he arrived from Australia to discover that the hundreds of thousands of southern Asian immigrant workers who toil in sweltering conditions to erect the gleaming buildings are paid as little as $5 a day. But Etheridge has no regrets about coming,  “everywhere I look there are just so many opportunities.”
Gina JohnsonYes, opportunities if you are white or Arab and can look away from the appalling abuse and even enslavement of others. In my book, if you ignore apartheid, you are complicit in the whole rotten system.

Gina Johnson, an executive with Dubai’s leading magazine and book publishing firm, loves the vividness of Dubai. “The light is very different here. When I go back to Australia, the first thing I notice is the vegetation. Everything looks kind of brown and crinkly, and here it’s all very stark and bright.” Johnson’s is a demanding career, but because she is freed from household chores, she has plenty of time to spend with her two children. “We have a full-time housekeeper who looks after all our domestic affairs,” she says, “and my husband and I look after the kids. It’s heaven.”

Yes, it must be wonderful leading the good life and leaving the drudgery to poorly paid servants. What a shocking role model for her children, who will grow up feeling that it’s OK treating non-whites as inferiors who are there simply to wait on them. Imagine if they come back to Australia and the kids go to school here with students of different ethnicities. Will they expect the non-whites to tidy up their desks for them or pick up their litter?
Cadzow ends by recounting how, looking out of her cab, she sees huge billboards with pictures of Sheik Mohammed. The prince, “who has a baby face and lashes like Bambi, recently paid a reported $2.9 million for a particularly handsome camel”, and quotes Gina Johnson, an executive for a publishing firm, who says “Everyone is happy here.”
Well, not everyone. I doubt that the “hundreds of thousands of southern Asian immigrant workers who toil in sweltering conditions” share Gina Johnson’s enthusiasm. Nor would the child jockeys who have been abducted from third world countries and live in appalling conditions, often being beaten, starved and sexually abused.

But who cares about this detritus of humanity, when there’s the good life to enjoy?
Obviously not these expats, whose rose-coloured glasses come equipped with moral blinkers.

If however, you are a person of conscience who cares about decency, equality and fairness, please boycott Dubai and Emirates.

History - Violent Jihad

Australians celebrate and revere Anzac Day on April 25th each year in remembrance of our brave soldiers who fought in two great world wars to secure our freedom. Every Australian identifies with the slogan “lest we forget” and in services held around the country people reflect on the battles and men who died to secure our freedom. Yet across the world in France, there is one remarkable battle which helped form the Europe we know today and allowed the development of civilization based on Judeo Christian principles. This one famous battle has become known as the battle of Tours and effectively stopped the Muslim advance into Europe. After the death of Mohammed in 632AD, Muslim armies exploded out of the Arabian peninsula to conquer much of the Middle East, expanding across north Africa. From there they crossed into Spain in 711AD and eventually controlled much of al-Andalus by 715AD. It was the victory at Tours by Charles Martel that stemmed the tide and eventually the Muslim marauders were expelled from Spain in 1492 when the last outpost at Granada fell to King Ferdinand of Spain.

History - Infidels' Resistance

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born, lived, fought and won battles against religious and social oppression in the 17th century Bharat or India. He was a shining star in the Indian firmament and is renowned as a champion of the downtrodden and depressed masses. He was and continues to be an icon for the classes and masses alike and is seen as a rallying point for peasants oppressed by foreign rulers, Pathans and Moghuls alike. Sexually exploited women found in Shivaji Raje a protector, a benefactor and flocked to his Hindavi Swaraj to find solace and feel liberated under his saffron flag.

Perhaps some readers might be interested to know that January 28 is considered a feast day among Catholics – actually 2 feast days are celebrated on the same day – one is of ST Thomas Aquinas, the great medieval theologian and philosopher who adapted Aristotle to the western Judeo-Christian worldview. . It is also the feast day of a lesser known person – St Peter Nolasco, the great ransomer of captives from the Muslims.

Barbary Corsair
Somalian Islamic Pirates & Lessons from History

The dramatic rescue of the American cargo-ship captain Richard Phillips from the hands of Somalian Islamic pirates by the U.S. Navy—killing three pirates, holding him hostage at gun-point, through precision-targeting—warrants a review of the U.S. struggle with piracy and hostage-taking in North Africa, which ended two centuries ago.

Raiding trade-caravans and hostage-taking for extracting ransom in Islam was started by Prophet Muhammad. Having become powerful and secure after his relocation to Medina from Mecca in 622, Muhammad initiated Jihad or holy war in the form of raids of trade-caravans for earning livelihood for his community. In the first successful raid of a Meccan caravan at Nakhla in December 623, his brigands killed one of the attendants, took two of them captive, and acquired the caravan as “sacred” booty. The captives were ransomed to generate further revenue. Muhammad, later on, expanded this mode of Jihad to raiding non-Muslim communities around Arabia—for capturing their homes, properties and livestock, capturing their women and children as slaves often for ransoming and selling, and imposing extortional taxes—which sometimes involved mass-slaughter of the attacked victims.

Battle of Broken Hill Logo

The First Islamic Terrorist Attack on Australian Soil

On January 1, 1915 two Broken Hill men, both former camel drivers, armed themselves with rifles, an homemade flag bearing Islamic insignia and a large supply of ammunition and launched a surprise attack on the Picnic Train about 3 kilometres outside Broken Hill.

The train carried about 1200 Broken Hill residents to Silverton where a picnic to celebrate the new year was to take place.

The two Muslim men, Gool Mohamed originally a Pashtun tribesman from Afghanistan and Mullah Abdullah from what is known today as Pakistan, decided to wage jihad against Australian infidels after Australia and the Ottoman Empire officially joined the opposite sides in the WWI.

Jihad Galore and the Toledo Whore

Battle of Higueruela

Alhambra - GazelleHow often in conversation with a Muslim, do they quote Spain as the crowning achievement of Islam, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in harmony for about 800 years?

And when you mention the killings and massacres, you are told that the Spanish Inquisition was much worse.
This is a misconception, since the Inquisition in Spain was responsible for only between 4,000 and 5,000 lives. [1]

Yet in 1066AD, in a single day, muslims murdered over 4,000 Jews because Vizier Joseph ibn Naghrela had risen to a position greater than them, and of course, this upset the Muslim sensitivities. [2]

History - Imperialism

Decisive Victory for the West

At this time of year, it is timely to remember one of the greatest victories of the west against the Islamic world. On the 7th October in 1571, Don Juan and the Holy League, led by Admiral Doria, defeated the larger Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto, saving Europe from the Turks and militant Islam. The Holy League was a coalition of different armies - of the Republic of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain (including Naples, Sicily and Sardinia), the Republic of Genoa, the Duchy of Savoy, the Knights Hospitaller and some others.

Jerusalem - Coat of ArmsWhy do Muslims insist that Jerusalem is their Holy City?
When Mohamed and his faithful followers moved from Mecca to Medina, they found themselves among three Jewish tribes/clans (BANU-L-NADIR, BANU KAINUKA and BANU KURAIZA)  which settled there some time after their expulsion from their homeland and also living there were  two Arab, pagan tribes.

Mohammed, who at this stage needed more followers, decided to win those tribes over and convert them to his newly invented religion.

Islam was yet not as fully developed as we know it today, and Mohammed was still having his sessions with Allah (the Medina period revelations).
